Google unveils new AI features for Maps in India

Google has announced an array of new AI-driven features for its Maps application specifically targeted for the Indian market. The tech giant unveiled these updates during its annual Google for India event, held on Thursday. The enhancements aim to improve the user experience by leveraging innovative technology to provide more detailed and personalised information.

Among the key features being introduced is the AI-powered review summary tool. This function will enable users to access condensed synopses of reviews, making it easier to gain insights into a place without sifting through numerous individual comments. This feature has already been available to Google Maps users in the United States since February, where it was met with positive feedback.

Moreover, Google Maps users in India will now have the ability to search for specific experiences. For instance, they can request information on “unique picnic spots” or search for businesses offering “themed birthday cakes”. This functionality is supported by advanced image recognition technology that links specific labels and descriptions of places to user queries. The results will be presented in an image-first format, highlighting photos uploaded by businesses and users.

In an effort to enhance user safety and navigation comfort, Google has also incorporated new weather alert features. These updates will notify users of challenging weather conditions, such as low visibility owing to fog or potential flooding on streets. Such features could prove particularly beneficial for drivers and commuters navigating India’s diverse and complex road networks.

The rollout of these new features is set to begin later this month. This set of enhancements arrives on the heels of previous India-specific updates introduced by Google in July, which included improved navigation guidance, better handling of flyovers and narrow roads, information on electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and community-driven lists for place discovery in select urban areas.
