Singapore and Rwanda Unveil AI Playbook for Small States at UN Summit
New York City, USA – In a significant stride towards fostering global technological inclusivity, Singapore and Rwanda have collaboratively introduced the “AI Playbook for Small States” during the United Nations (UN) Summit of the Future (SOTF) Action Day – A Digital Future for All. This comprehensive guide aims to help small nations harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI).
The playbook was formally announced by Josephine Teo, Singapore’s Minister for Digital Development and Information, in New York City. Drawing on the experiences of Digital Forum for Small States (Digital FOSS) members, the AI Playbook is an anthology of best practices detailing how small states have successfully implemented AI strategies and policies.
The initiative is led by Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) in close collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Innovation. The playbook’s development has involved consultations with various Digital FOSS members throughout the year, representing a diversity of geographies and providing a rich repository of shared experiences and insights.
The AI Playbook is designed to address multiple challenges small states face in their AI adoption journeys. These nations often grapple with limited resources and funding, access to relevant data and AI talent, and the complexities of developing robust AI governance policies and frameworks. Through shared experiences and practical solutions, the playbook aims to equip small states with the necessary tools to navigate these challenges effectively.
Speaking at the summit, Minister Teo highlighted that the AI Playbook was more than just a guide; it represents a collective effort by small states to actively participate in and contribute to the ongoing global AI discourse. By showcasing how different countries are tackling AI adoption and innovation, the playbook aspires to foster an environment where small states can thrive and make significant contributions to the global technological landscape.
The unveiling of the AI Playbook signifies a major milestone in the digital transformation journeys of small states and is poised to facilitate a more inclusive and equitable global approach to AI development and implementation.
