Zen42.ai partners with Mobii Green Energy on a pioneering project to create the world’s first green hydrogen-powered data centre in New Zealand, aiming for a sustainable AI infrastructure.
Zen42.ai Joins Groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Initiative in New Zealand
In a pioneering step towards sustainable technological advancement, Zen42.ai has officially partnered with the Mobii Green Energy’s New Zealand Green HI-City project to develop the world’s first green hydrogen-powered data centre. This endeavour, spearheaded by Mobii Green Energy Group alongside New Zealand’s North Rakaia Power Company, marks a significant milestone in the realm of sustainable AI infrastructure.
The formal signing of the cooperation agreement was attended by notable figures, including Kenny Tseng, Chairman of Mobii Green Energy, and Yali Li, the platform’s Founder. The event, held in the presence of Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton, was also witnessed by representatives from major corporations such as Supermicro and Zen42.ai.
The ambitious Green HI-City project is projected to garner an impressive $2 billion in investments. It plans to harmonise 850 MW of solar power, 300 MW of wind power, and incorporate green hydrogen production facilities to support its 150 MW AI data centre. The venture is wholly dedicated to using green energy, with support from prominent partners including Google Cloud, Supermicro, and Tatung System Technologies Inc. (tsti). Zen42.ai, known for its expertise in decentralised AI infrastructure and green energy solutions, aims to ensure that the project meets international standards in sustainability and computational power demands.
Strategically positioned near New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric plant in the South Island, the project takes advantage of a direct power grid connection, which not only reduces infrastructure costs but also expedites the permitting process.
Zen42.ai was co-founded by three innovators—Josh Chen from VNET Group, Kenny Tseng of Mobii Green Energy, and former Morgan Stanley Asia veteran Enoch Kang. The enterprise, classified as an “Exponential Organization,” has crafted a vision to build a “green energy-driven, AI-native decentralized infrastructure.” Zen42.ai’s initiatives are aligned with a Massive Transformative Purpose (MTP) geared towards achieving net-zero emissions, further supported by the Hyper-Connected AI Consortium based in Hong Kong, and sponsored by the global data centre leader, VNET Group.
This cutting-edge project includes the deployment of blockchain technology by Zen42.ai to develop new incentive models such as carbon credit tokens and green computing power tokens, underpinning a digital carbon economy. This tokenised structure aims to unite stakeholders, motivating their contributions towards the company’s ambitious objectives.
New Zealand MP Nancy Lu, under ministerial guidance, will continue to champion the project, with invitations extended to Minister of Technology Judith Collins and Minister of Economic Development Melissa Lee to support the project’s advancement.
In discussing the scope of the project, Kenny Tseng articulated the vision of leveraging green computing for carbon credits, prefiguring it as a foundation for stablecoin development. He underscored that Zen42.ai’s mission is closely aligned with Mobii Green Energy’s sustainability ethos, also hinting at prospective expansions into Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Middle East. The ultimate goal is to roll out the Green HI-City project across 100 cities globally, laying the groundwork for a sustainable, AI-powered future.
