The British Independent Retailers Association champions the use of artificial intelligence to revitalise the UK high street, as discussed in their latest podcast episode focused on boosting social media engagement for small businesses.
In a bid to revitalise the UK high street, the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) is championing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) among independent retailers. This comes as part of Bira’s efforts to transform the landscape of small businesses across the nation, featured in the recent episode of their “High Street Matters” podcast series.
The latest instalment, titled “AI and Retail – Boost Your Social Media Output with AI,” offers a detailed exploration of how AI technology can be a game-changer for small retailers. Hosted by journalist Steve Dyson, the podcast episode includes insights from industry veterans and successful traders who have already reaped the benefits of AI. A notable contributor is Polly Barnfield, founder and chief executive of Maybe, a firm dedicated to providing AI solutions tailored for retail businesses.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, commented on the significance of AI for today’s retailers. “AI is no longer just a buzzword – it’s becoming an essential tool for retailers of all sizes. This episode demonstrates how independent shops can harness AI to enhance their digital presence, increase footfall, and ultimately boost revenues.”
The podcast discourses offer practical examples of how AI can bolster social media efforts by generating personalised content, improve customer engagement, and boost footfall in physical stores. It also delves into cost-effective solutions designed for smaller businesses and provides real-world testimonies of AI’s positive impact in the retail sector.
Highlighting a partnership with Maybe, Bira members are offered discounted access to AI-powered tools, further easing the integration process for independent retailers. Polly Barnfield noted, “Our AI solution helps traders create engaging social media content effortlessly, saving time and resources while effectively reaching their target audience.”
Beyond the podcast, Bira addresses broader economic conditions affecting retailers, with recent data showing an increase in UK retail sales year-on-year in September. While this uptick is a promising sign after several months of decline, Goodacre stresses that increased sales alone are insufficient to offset rising operational costs faced by businesses.
“It’s encouraging to see sales growth in September, especially after many months of decline. However, we must recognise that this growth in sales is not covering the increase in costs that retailers are facing,” Goodacre stated. He emphasised the potential for future business investments contingent upon stable economic conditions, specifically urging the government to consider maintaining current business rates in the upcoming Autumn Statement.
With Bira representing over 6,000 independent businesses across the UK, the association underlines the necessity for sustained government support to ensure continued recovery and growth within the retail sector. Their ongoing podcast series serves to keep retailers informed on dynamic industry trends, with future episodes set to cover diverse topics pertinent to today’s evolving retail environment. The “High Street Matters” podcast is readily accessible on all major streaming platforms.
