Philips celebrates 20 years of Ambilight technology with its new OLED959 model, featuring a stunning 65-inch OLED panel and a host of premium specifications aimed at enhancing the viewing and gaming experience.
Philips has unveiled a notable addition to its 2024 OLED TV lineup with the launch of the OLED959 model, which celebrates 20 years of Ambilight technology. This innovative model stands out in the competitive field of high-end televisions, matching the prowess of leading contenders such as the LG G4 and Samsung S95D.
The Philips OLED959 is equipped with a 65-inch second-generation Micro Lens Array (MLA) OLED panel, boasting a luminance of up to 3000 nits, establishing it among the brightest in its category. Supporting all mainstream HDR formats—HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG—it delivers a rich visual experience. Notably, the OLED959 is only available in this 65-inch size, emphasizing its status as a bespoke luxury item within the Philips range.
The model comes with a floor stand and an integrated sound system that enhances its premium appeal. For gaming aficionados, the OLED959 offers an array of features typical of elite televisions, including a maximum 144Hz refresh rate. The two HDMI 2.1 ports provide support for 4K/120Hz gaming with VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). Additionally, it is compatible with Dolby Vision Gaming, catering specifically to certain Xbox Series X titles.
Integrating the latest in artificial intelligence technology, the Philips OLED959 is powered by the 8th Gen P5 AI Dual Engine. It incorporates several advanced features such as Ambient Intelligence V3, AI Machine Learn Sharpness V2, and Smart Bit Enhancement. The Ambient Intelligence technology adapts HDR performance according to the ambient light in the room, ensuring optimal viewing in both bright and dark conditions. Meanwhile, the AI Machine Learn Sharpness and Smart Bit Enhancement work together to enhance image detail and realism, upscaling 8-bit video to near 14-bit precision.
A hallmark of the OLED959 is the enhanced four-sided Ambilight Plus system, designed to integrate the viewing experience with the surrounding room. With 192 lighting zones, the system projects the on-screen image onto the wall behind the TV, offering precise motion tracking and an immersive effect.
Sound quality is a key feature of the OLED959, as it includes a sophisticated 5.1.2 sound system from Bowers & Wilkins. This setup comprises 18 drivers, delivering distinct front, left, and right channel audio through midrange drivers and B&W’s renowned titanium dome tweeter. Additionally, side-firing and upward-firing drivers enhance surround sound capabilities, providing immersive Dolby Atmos effects. A rear-mounted subwoofer and passive radiators enrich bass output, with the option to connect an external subwoofer for even deeper sound. The sound system’s 12 channels of amplification boast a total output of 102 watts, making it one of the most powerful available in a television.
However, these advanced features come with a significant cost. The OLED959 is available for purchase at Richer Sounds, priced at £3999. This sets it apart financially from other models in the Philips lineup, such as the £2099 65OLED809 and the £2799 65OLED909.
