Apple has unveiled its new software, Apple Intelligence, but has excluded many anticipated features, leaving users awaiting future enhancements that will be rolled out over the coming year.
Apple has launched its latest software offering, Apple Intelligence, albeit without many of the anticipated features that garnered attention during June’s announcement. While there was considerable excitement about the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Apple’s software ecosystem, the chatbot will not be featured in this initial release. Similarly, enhancements to Siri, which were expected to enable it to synthesise information across various applications, such as estimating if a last-minute meeting would delay attendance at a child’s play, are not yet available. According to Apple, these advancements, among others, are scheduled for gradual introduction throughout the coming year.
Apple Intelligence is designed to work with specific hardware, including the newly released iPhone 16, last year’s iPhone 15 Pro, and select iPads and Mac computers introduced over the past four years. While testing an early version over a week, the integration of new features across the Apple software landscape, particularly in areas such as text and photo editing, proved to be somewhat elusive.
The software presents several features that may pique user interest and utility. Among the more practical tools are those designed for text proofreading and audio transcription, which have been highlighted as notably useful. However, some features did not perform consistently. In particular, a tool intended to generate summaries of web articles and another aimed at removing unwanted elements from photographs showed variable effectiveness, suggesting that users might prefer to bypass these elements for now.
Apple’s official stance positions Apple Intelligence as a significant development to monitor in the years to come, with potential to evolve into an indispensable component of the Apple experience. However, this current iteration is seen as insufficient motivation for users to invest in new Apple hardware solely for the new software capabilities.
As Apple Intelligence becomes accessible on supported devices this month, users are advised of the tools that are most and least likely to enhance their daily technology interactions. While some anticipatory features are absent, the forthcoming months are expected to witness their incremental rollout, gradually enriching the user experience with Apple’s latest technological advancements.
