The latest Google TV update introduces innovative features, including smart home control and AI-driven content discovery, aimed at improving user experiences across devices.
Google has introduced a significant update for Google TV devices, which encompasses the newly launched Google TV Streamer. This update extends several innovative features to TVs and projectors that operate on the Google TV system. Although most of these features do not directly enhance audiovisual capabilities, they broaden the functionality and user experience of the devices.
Google TV, which is integrated into televisions and devices from a variety of manufacturers such as Sony, Philips, TCL, and Hisense in the United States, is also seeing a rising implementation in projectors from brands like Xgimi and Epson. Moreover, Google is updating older devices like the now-discontinued Chromecast with Google TV, although this device will not benefit from the full suite of features available on the new Google TV Streamer.
One of the main focuses of the update is the advancement of smart home integration. Users can now control smart home appliances including lighting systems, thermostats, and security cameras directly from their Google TV-enabled devices. This enhancement allows for the receipt of smart doorbell notifications without interrupting video playback, enhancing multitasking capabilities. Furthermore, Google Assistant enables voice control over these smart home devices, offering solutions to problems such as misplaced remotes.
The update also marks a wider rollout of the Gemini AI system within Google TV devices. Gemini introduces generative AI screensavers, which allow users to create bespoke AI-generated images to be displayed in ambient mode. Additionally, the Gemini AI engine augments content overviews, providing viewers with detailed synopses, audience reviews, and comprehensive breakdowns of TV series by season. This feature proves particularly useful for viewers catching up on episodic content after a long intermission.
Google has also improved content discovery and accessibility through the update. A newly added sports tab on the “For You” page offers streamlined access to live and upcoming sporting events, sports commentary, game highlights, and personalised content based on individual sports and team preferences. The Freeplay feature, which provides free online live channels, has been enhanced with a guide to help users navigate over 150 channels, which can now be filtered according to topic or genre.
Users can access this update immediately by navigating to their device’s settings, selecting system updates, and installing the latest version available. This roll-out promises to significantly enrich the user experience by integrating cutting-edge technology and enhancing user interaction with both entertainment content and smart home devices.
