Woodbridge High School student Owen Montgomery transforms his passion for technology into a promising career path, exemplifying the power of curiosity and supportive learning environments in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
In the bustling environment of Woodbridge High School’s Makerspace, a discovery hub fuelled by innovation and technology, a young student named Owen Montgomery found both his passion and his path. The Makerspace program, orchestrated by science and design model making instructor Daniel Pilchman, provides a hands-on, exploratory environment, harnessing technology to inspire students.
Owen Montgomery, recognised for his inquisitive nature and affable character, walked into this creative haven intrigued by technology but uncertain of where his interests would lead him. Montgomery’s journey in the Makerspace began with an unorthodox decision – he dismantled a 3D printer. Though initially unsure of how to reassemble it, his willingness to explore the unknown marked the beginning of a transformative educational experience. Pilchman recalls this moment as a testament to Montgomery’s fearlessness and thirst for knowledge, epitomising the essence of the Makerspace philosophy: encouraging students to pursue challenges that might at first seem daunting.
A pivotal interest developed in Montgomery through his engagement with artificial intelligence (AI). While Pilchman’s curriculum utilised various AI tools such as Adobe Firefly for design tasks, it was Montgomery’s initiative to delve deeper into AI that stood out. He independently used platforms like ChatGPT to devise new solutions and ideas, applying AI learnings to improve workflows and processes. His exceptional engagement and growing expertise became apparent by his senior year, where he demonstrated leadership within the program and mastery over complex machinery like the CNC router. This machine, known for its precision in material carving, became a playground for Montgomery’s experiments combining AI and machining.
Recognising Montgomery’s aptitude and eagerness, Pilchman facilitated an apprenticeship for him with Parker Hannifin, an industry leader in aerospace technology headquartered in Irvine. This opportunity allows Montgomery to work on motion control systems essential to military applications, including those used in the F-35 fighter jet. Within this role, Montgomery leverages AI to enhance his work processes—drawing blueprints, executing simulations, and troubleshooting high-level machinery operations. He affirms, “AI isn’t taking over what we do; it’s helping us become better at the things we do.”
Though AI’s integration into aerospace is still developing, Montgomery regards it as a transformative agent with significant potential. In conjunction with his apprenticeship, he is furthering his education at Orange Coast College, ensuring he stays at the forefront of technological advancements.
The synergy of Montgomery’s burgeoning talent alongside the guiding support from educators like Pilchman highlights the incredible impact that nurturing environments can have on young minds. Pilchman remarks, “Owen’s journey reflects the power of curiosity and the importance of a supportive environment. When paired with emerging technology like AI, the possibilities are limitless.” Montgomery’s story serves as a notable example of how passion, combined with opportunity and innovation, can carve out new trajectories for aspiring technologists.
