As the US military increasingly adopts AI tools, experts warn about the potential risks and inaccuracies associated with their deployment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly become integrated into military operations, particularly within the United States, as various defence sectors embrace this technology for a range of applications. The Financial Times recently reported that in 2023, leading AI developers like Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI made strides by proclaiming the availability of their AI foundation models for use by US national security agencies. While the deployment of AI in warfare is often mired in controversy and criticism, a more subtle layer of AI integration within the US military appears to be unfolding quietly.

Historically mundane tasks, such as communication management, coding, and data processing, are being bolstered by AI tools. For instance, the U.S. Africa Command (USAfricom) has openly acknowledged utilizing an OpenAI platform designed specifically for “unified analytics for data processing.” Although these administrative functions may seem innocuous, experts warn that the introduction of AI into such operations carries inherent risks. The potential for these models to produce inaccurate or fabricated outputs—often referred to as “hallucinations”—raises alarms about their reliability in critical decision-making environments.

These challenges highlight a troubling duality: while AI systems are claimed to improve efficiency and accuracy, they may inadvertently foster a range of vulnerabilities. Proponents of AI within military contexts assert that these tools enhance scalability and operational effectiveness. However, the actual procurement and adoption processes demonstrate a worrying lack of understanding regarding the associated risks, including the possible manipulation of data that AI models rely upon, which could have dire implications for mission outcomes.

The military’s foray into AI is not isolated to USAfricom alone. This year saw the US Air Force and Space Force roll out a generative AI chatbot named the Non-classified Internet Protocol Generative Pre-training Transformer, or NIPRGPT, designed to assist with various tasks including generating background documents and coding. Similarly, the Navy has introduced an AI tech-support tool called Amelia to streamline operations in naval communications and logistics.

Concerns arise about how the military organisations have incorporated these AI solutions. The foundational problem lies in a general oversight regarding the true scale of risk associated with using AI. A significant factor influencing this oversight is the tendency to classify AI systems as mere extensions of existing IT infrastructure, overlooking their analytical potential to significantly shift mission-critical outcomes. This misclassification can bypass standard procurement procedures designed to evaluate the appropriateness of technology for sensitive operations, raising questions about the oversight exercised by military organisations.

Research from Cornell University illustrates the precarious reliability of code generation tools. According to their findings, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Amazon CodeWhisperer achieved accuracy rates of only 65.2%, 46.3%, and 31.1% respectively when generating accurate code. These statistics underscore the pressing need for caution, especially in applications where precision is paramount.

As AI developers promote enhancements to their models, the current performance rates call into question the viability of using these systems in critical areas of defence. The accumulation of small errors over time, coupled with an overreliance on AI for decision-making, presents a scenario where even minor inaccuracies could lead to significant consequences, such as civilian harm or operational failures.

The Financial Times reveals a growing concern within the sector regarding the implications of AI automated systems in military contexts. The anticipated benefits of efficiency should not overshadow the inherent risks; as the military continues to navigate the uncharted waters of AI integration, scrutiny over these practices may prove essential in preventing future mishaps.
