Furthermore, a larger group, comprising 53% of participants, voiced discomfort with AI handling payroll-related inquiries that would traditionally be addressed by humans.
Dan Maddux, executive director at PAYO, commented on the survey results, emphasising the multifaceted nature of payroll systems. According to Maddux, payroll is deeply intertwined with employees’ financial security and wellbeing. Despite potential advantages that AI may present, many employees retain a preference for human involvement in complex payroll matters, seeking reassurance and a personal touch from payroll professionals.
The survey’s findings underscore the importance of human oversight in maintaining employee trust when it comes to payroll matters. Employers are thus tasked with finding an optimal balance that harnesses the efficiency and precision AI can offer while still delivering the level of personalised service that their employees expect. Transparency regarding AI’s role in payroll processes, as well as education initiatives, may play crucial roles in assuaging employee concerns and building trust in AI systems.
Teresa Smith, director of the Human Capital Management (HCM) strategic advisory group at UKG, weighed in on the discourse, highlighting the necessity for organisations to aid their workforce in comprehending AI’s utility, particularly within payroll departments. Smith pointed out that AI can provide additional support by notifying employees and managers of potential discrepancies, such as unrecorded clock-ins or issues with pay. Moreover, AI can present new avenues for increased earnings by identifying opportunities related to skill enhancement or professional certifications.
Beyond employee-related benefits, AI-powered payroll systems are positioned to significantly simplify the task of analysing substantial datasets, extracting insights that could inform and guide strategic business decisions.
