Supermicro launches H14 series servers featuring 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors

Supermicro has unveiled its latest H14 series servers, which utilise the newly released 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors. The launch of these systems marks a significant enhancement in data centre computing capabilities, offering unprecedented core counts of up to 192 cores per CPU, alongside a thermal design power (TDP) reaching up to 500 watts.

The Supermicro H14 series encompasses a diverse range of systems tailored for modern computing demands, including enterprise, cloud, and AI applications. Notably, the series includes the Hyper-, FlexTwin™, and CloudDC systems, all designed to manage the rigorous thermal and energy requirements dictated by these cutting-edge processors. The new systems also significantly enhance performance metrics, boasting a 2.44 times improvement in SPECrate®2017_fp_base performance over previous H11 systems powered by the 2nd Gen AMD EPYC 7002-series CPUs.

Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro, emphasised the H14 series’ ability to drive efficiency in data centres, potentially reducing their footprint by two-thirds. This improvement comes without compromising on the new AI processing capabilities introduced by the H14 servers, which offer advanced cooling options utilising both air and liquid to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.

The family of servers includes several standout models, such as:

1. Hyper Servers: Designed for enterprise environments, these servers support up to two EPYC 9005 CPUs with a maximum of 192 cores per CPU and 9TB of memory across 24 DIMM slots. They are available in configurations that can house up to 24 NVMe/SATA drives, suitable for demanding AI inference, enterprise, and cloud workloads.

2. CloudDC Servers: Optimised for cloud data centres, these systems carry a single EPYC 9005 CPU and follow the Open Compute Platform (OCP) DC-MHS specification, ensuring compatibility with OCP standards.

3. GrandTwin™ Platform: This compact 4-node system module utilises a single EPYC 9005 CPU within a 2U format, making it adept at handling multi-server cluster applications, including object storage and high-performance computing (HPC).

4. FlexTwin™ Systems: Featuring a high-density, 2U 4-node architecture, these systems host dual EPYC 9005 CPUs per node and leverage advanced liquid cooling for energy-efficient HPC and electronic design automation (EDA) workloads.

5. High-Density GPU Systems: Among these, the 5U GPU system supports up to 10 double-width accelerators and the 8U GPU model, designed for large-scale AI training, pairs the AMD Instinct MI325X GPU with the EPYC 9005 CPU.

The Supermicro H14 series was showcased at the AMD Advancing AI Day, held on 10 October 2024, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Customers can currently test these products through Supermicro’s JumpStart programme.
