Reddit Unveils Multilingual Translation Tool and AI-Generated Summaries

San Francisco, CA – In a major update aimed at fostering inclusivity and broadening its global reach, Reddit has rolled out a new machine translation tool that enables users to translate posts and comments into their preferred language. This feature is now available to users in over 35 countries, including Spain, Brazil, and Germany, across all platforms—mobile web, apps, and desktop.

Whenever a Redditor shares a post or comment in their chosen language, the tool automatically translates it into the community’s native language. Within the next few weeks, a banner will highlight these translated posts and offer users the option to view them in the original language. The translation options can be found through the post-overflow menus.

In addition to in-platform translations, Reddit is also integrating this feature with external search engines. As a result, translated Reddit posts will start appearing in search results, making it easier for users to find relevant content and communities in their languages outside the platform.

This initiative began earlier this year when Reddit introduced a machine translation tool for its French users. The success of this initial rollout paved the way for its global expansion. Latino and Portuguese-speaking Redditors in Brazil and Spain, among others, can now hit the translate icon in the overflow menu at the top right of the Reddit app to convert their entire feed—posts and comments—into new language options. This capability allows users to join discussions and engage with communities in their native tongues, thus breaking down language barriers and enhancing user experience.

In conjunction with this translation tool, Reddit has also started testing AI-generated summaries, a new feature that aligns with similar advancements made by tech giants like Google and Microsoft. Google’s AI Overviews and Microsoft’s Bing AI-generated answers are parallel innovations that seek to condense and summarise information, making it more accessible to users. These summaries aim to provide concise overviews of discussions, making it easier for users to grasp the gist of conversations without having to navigate through extensive threads.

The introduction of AI and machine translation features marks a significant step for Reddit as it continues to evolve in the digital landscape. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Reddit not only enhances its platform’s usability but also strengthens its position in the competitive realm of social media and content discovery.
