Reddit is set to launch an AI-driven translation feature allowing users in 35 new countries to engage with content in their preferred languages, enhancing global user interaction.
Reddit Announces Expansive AI Translation Feature to Reach 35 More Countries
Reddit, the internationally recognised social media forum, is set to enable users in 35 additional countries to read and respond to posts and comments in their preferred languages through an artificial intelligence-driven translation feature. The company announced on Wednesday that this innovative feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
The new translation and localisation functionality, which has already undergone testing earlier this year in France, is currently available in Spain and Brazil. According to Reddit, the feature will soon extend to users in Germany, Italy, the Philippines, and various countries across Latin America. This update will be accessible on mobile devices, desktop browsers, and Reddit’s official apps, offering users the capability to click on a translation icon to convert their entire feed into their chosen language.
In the announcement, Reddit highlighted that responses to posts and comments will automatically be translated back into the language of the original community where the content was initially posted. Additionally, users will see a banner notifying them when a post has been translated, with an option available to view posts and comments in their original language. Reddit is also working on integrating translated content into its search results.
The company’s latest initiative builds on a $60 million agreement with Google earlier this year, which allows Google’s AI models to train on user-generated content sourced from Reddit. This collaboration is part of Reddit’s broader strategy to enhance user experience and content accessibility on the platform.
Recent projections by Statista estimate that Reddit will grow to approximately 53 million active monthly users in the United States by the next year, up from an estimated 49 million as of the second quarter of 2024.
As this feature becomes available, Reddit aims to foster greater interaction and engagement among its global user base, overcoming language barriers and making the platform more inclusive for users worldwide.
