Nokia’s enrolment in the AI Pact reflects its commitment to the responsible use of artificial intelligence as it prepares for the European Union’s forthcoming AI Act, set to be implemented gradually from August 2024.

Nokia Joins AI Pact Ahead of EU’s AI Act Implementation

Nokia has confirmed its enrolment in the AI Pact, a voluntary framework designed to aid businesses in preparing for alignment with the European Union’s forthcoming AI Act. This strategic move underscores Nokia’s commitment to responsible and innovative deployment of artificial intelligence in its communication and industrial automation technologies.

The European Union’s AI Act, a binding legislative framework set to regulate AI system usage based on their associated risk levels, officially came into force in August 2024. The Act’s comprehensive requirements are scheduled to be implemented gradually over a three-year span, affecting a wide array of industries and technological sectors.

The AI Pact aims to support companies in gearing up for full compliance with the AI Act, assisting them in adapting their existing AI compliance processes and sharing insights through EU-organised workshops. The initiative posts a collaborative platform for businesses to refine their AI strategies and processes in anticipation of the impending regulatory criteria.

Ingrid Viitanen, General Counsel for Nokia Strategy & Technology, emphasised the significance of Nokia’s participation in the AI Pact. “Nokia’s AI Pact pledges underscore our ongoing commitment to the responsible, innovative and business-oriented implementation of artificial intelligence in our AI-powered products and services,” she said. Viitanen also highlighted the establishment of Nokia’s AI Governance Framework program, dedicated to enhancing internal AI processes and fostering trust with various stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities.

Marking a pivotal role in Nokia’s AI strategy, its research division, Nokia Bell Labs, stands as an industry leader in AI technologies and their application to communication networks and industrial automation. With a formidable focus on Responsible AI, Nokia Bell Labs established six guiding principles in 2022: fairness, reliability, privacy, transparency, sustainability, and accountability. These principles are designed to steer AI research and development, aligning with the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and sound governance.

Nokia’s active contribution to creating industry standards in line with the AI Act’s requirements exemplifies its forward-thinking approach. By sharing its experiences and knowledge both transparently and collaboratively, Nokia aims to enhance the collective capacity of its industry peers and support the efforts of the EU AI Office.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, Nokia’s engagement with the AI Pact places it at the forefront of responsible AI deployment, illustrating its readiness to navigate and shape the regulatory environment driven by the forthcoming AI Act.
