London Standard explores AI in art criticism with unique newspaper venture

The London Standard has embarked on a fascinating venture by integrating artificial intelligence into its new weekly print edition. The publication’s inaugural issue features an AI-generated review of the National Gallery’s “Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers” exhibition. The review is crafted in the style of the renowned late art critic Brian Sewell, known for his distinct and often acerbic writing.

This experiment is emblematic of a broader exploration into the intersection of technology and the arts. However, the underlying objectives of this venture remain somewhat elusive. While traditionally, experiments are designed with specific hypotheses to validate or refute, the London Standard has been reticent about the design and specifics of its AI system, such as the training data and algorithms utilised. Consequently, speculation abounds regarding the true purpose behind this AI-generated critique.

There are multiple dimensions to consider. It might be an investigative foray into the evolving role of art critics and whether technology can suitably fill such roles traditionally occupied by humans. Alternatively, it could stimulate a larger societal discourse on the replaceability of human roles by technology. It may also delve into the ethical realm, pondering how technology might assist in preserving the essence of individuals that are no longer with us. Or, simply, it could serve as a modern iteration of the Turing test, evaluating how closely AI can mimic human intelligence.

Another interpretation of the experiment might be philosophical, examining whether human qualities can indeed be encapsulated by machines. One perspective, as suggested by writer Yuval Noah Harari, is the notion of “de-individuation”. This term suggests that as AI breaks down human characteristics into data points, the essence of the individual becomes fragmented. Applying this concept to Sewell’s style, the AI’s emulation might fragment his distinctive voice and persona.

Despite the sophistication of AI, critics argue that the AI-generated review falls short. Many feel it lacks Sewell’s trademark sharpness and elegance. Nonetheless, this critique opens a window into a deeper, philosophical concern about technology’s potential to diminish the human element, reducing complex human experiences to mere computational processes.

Philosopher Hannah Arendt, in her seminal 1958 work “The Human Condition”, cautioned against such reductionism. She described the unique human capacity for creativity and storytelling – what she termed “action”. Arendt highlighted that this form of human communication relies on interpersonal trust and understanding, which could be compromised in a world where machines mimic human interaction.

More recently, philosopher Daniel Dennett, who passed away earlier this year, shared concerns about the implications of artificial intelligence on trust. Dennett was wary not just of AI’s potential to revolutionise industries, but of its capacity to blur the lines between reality and fabrication, eroding human trust.

As the London Standard’s experiment unfolds, it inadvertently raises questions about the role AI might play in the arts, and more broadly, the potential impacts on human society. Amidst the discussions, the experiment reminds the public of the continuing conversation around the implications of AI and the complex relationship between technology, authenticity, and trust in the modern world.
