Google has unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, showcasing a blend of advanced AI capabilities and a sleek new design. Receiving widespread attention, these devices have been touted for their attractive features but have also faced scrutiny due to some of their shortcomings.
Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL, in particular, has been tested by many industry experts, including Andrew Lanxon from CNET. Based on his 13 years of experience in mobile technology, Lanxon delivered his verdict after thorough testing of the device in numerous real-life conditions. He praised its updated design, impressive daytime photography, and long software support. However, he also highlighted the drawbacks, such as the device’s cost and relatively poor low light image capturing.
Interestingly, the Pixel 9 Pro XL features Google’s Gemini Advanced AI, which is capable of generating reviews about the device itself when prompted. Lanxon put this to the test by asking Gemini to create a self-review, one of which described the Pixel 9 Pro XL as “Google’s biggest and boldest smartphone yet,” highlighting its “sleek design,” “6.8-inch display,” and “powerful Tensor G4 chip.” It also noted the camera’s performance as exceptional in various lighting conditions and praised the device’s battery life. Nevertheless, the review also acknowledged the phone’s high cost and limited storage expansion options.
However, Lanxon found some discrepancies in the AI-generated reviews. While some matched his observations, others inflated certain aspects, particularly the camera capabilities, possibly making them sound more like marketing pitches than honest reviews. Additionally, the AI’s ability to provide consistent reviews was questionable. Variations in wording led to different reviews with inconsistencies regarding photography abilities and battery life. Errors such as referencing the incorrect Tensor G3 processor instead of the correct Tensor G4 were also noted.
This unpredictable nature of AI-generated content mirrors the broader challenges associated with AI technology. Factors like data sourcing and algorithmic variance can lead to disparate outcomes, as demonstrated by Lanxon’s experiment where multiple iterations of the request produced varied results.
The testing of Gemini Advanced has illuminated a critical aspect of AI technology: while it can be a powerful tool, it currently lacks the reliability and contextual understanding of human expertise. In Lanxon’s exploration, AI occasionally provided fictitious suggestions, highlighting the ongoing necessity for human oversight and expertise when dealing with AI-generated information. Thus, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s AI functions are remarkable, users should remain discerning regarding AI-driven insights.
