Following its launch for Android, Google has now made the Gemini-powered Q&A feature available for iPhone users, enhancing email management through AI technology.
In a significant update to its services, Google has rolled out the Gemini-powered Gmail Q&A feature for iPhone users, following its initial launch for Android users in August. This innovative feature is available to users who either have a Google One AI Premium plan or a Workspace account, extending the capabilities of Gmail’s interface considerably.
Google’s new feature leverages the power of Gemini, an AI tool, to enhance email management by allowing users to ask questions and navigate their inbox with unprecedented ease. A Google blog post outlines the operational framework of this tool. Users can, for instance, issue commands such as “show unread emails from Jordan,” or make inquiries like “what was I talking about with Chris?” This goes beyond mere searching, as it also provides insights like summarizing emails related to particular topics or answering more general questions about the content in the inbox, all without necessitating a departure from the Gmail interface.
Currently, the service is limited to English-speaking users but promises a seamless integration of AI into email management. To access these capabilities, users must either be subscribed to Google AI Premium, which is priced at $19.99 in the United States, £18.99 in the United Kingdom, or AU$32.99 in Australia per month, or possess a Workspace account that includes the Gemini add-ons, with smart features and personalization enabled.
For users meeting these criteria, the Gemini star icon will appear on the top right corner of the Gmail app on both Android and iOS devices. On viewing an individual email, the icon is positioned towards the top centre. Once tapped, this icon activates the Gemini interface, allowing users to initiate questions and instructions. The system is intuitively designed, enabling users to phrase their queries naturally, as one might converse with a personal assistant. This functionality facilitates access to specified messages, conversation summaries, and detailed email content insights.
Initial tests reveal that the Gmail Q&A performs effectively, although users are advised to verify critical information manually, as AI is still prone to errors. Conveniently, Gemini indicates the sources of its information directly under its responses, allowing users to review the referenced emails.
This advancement aligns with the broader scope of Gemini’s functionalities already present in Gmail, which includes tools for composing and revising emails. Moreover, Google has announced that similar AI-driven search abilities will also be introduced to Google Drive shortly, signalling a push towards more integrated and intelligent tools within its ecosystem.
This expansion not only reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience through AI but also exemplifies the ongoing transformative impact of AI technologies across everyday digital tasks. By simplifying the user interaction with inboxes, Google positions itself at the forefront of email management innovation.
