This technology, which can create hyper-realistic images and videos, is being exploited to produce sexually explicit content featuring children. The scale of the problem is alarming, with reports suggesting that thousands of such images are generated daily, impacting potentially millions of children, either through direct victimisation or awareness of victimised peers.

A recent report from the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) highlights the widespread nature of this issue within American high schools. According to the report, 15 percent of high school students have heard of an AI-generated image depicting someone from their school in a sexually explicit or intimate manner. The ability of generative AI to produce novel images complicates efforts to combat child sexual abuse material (CSAM), as traditional detection methods rely on databases of known abusive images. AI-generated content circumvents this by producing new, previously unrecognised material.

The repercussions in educational environments are profound. Elizabeth Laird, the director of equity in civic technology at CDT and co-author of the report, expressed concern over the increased potential for both victimisation and perpetration among students. As generative AI tools become more accessible, the risks multiply, transforming schools into platforms where technologies meant to innovate and simplify tasks are instead facilitating serious violations of privacy.

This misuse of AI has not gone unnoticed by global authorities. A United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute survey revealed that half of the surveyed law-enforcement officers worldwide have come across AI-generated CSAM. The technology’s rapid advancement outpaces current protective measures, requiring urgent updates to educational policies and comprehensive awareness programmes for students and parents.

Despite the severity of the challenges, experts believe that solutions are within reach. For instance, one expert in the field mentioned that there remains a crucial opportunity to mitigate these risks through coordinated efforts and proactive measures.
