Clearview AI’s facial recognition software has been instrumental for Ukraine’s State Border Service, enabling the identification of over 10,000 individuals, including captured citizens and suspected collaborators.
Kyiv, Ukraine — Clearview AI, a technology firm from the United States, has played a crucial role in supporting Ukraine’s border agency amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. The collaboration began in March 2022, as the Russian Federation initiated a comprehensive military invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the State Border Service of Ukraine has integrated Clearview AI’s facial recognition software, facilitating approximately 100 users within the service.
Recently, a significant meeting took place between the Administration of the State Border Service of Ukraine and Hoan Ton-That, the founder and executive director of Clearview AI. This meeting focused on the application of Clearview’s technology in the regular operations of the border service and explored the potential for continued cooperation in the future.
Clearview AI’s software has notably enhanced the agency’s ability to tackle crimes that fall within its jurisdiction since the escalation of the conflict. The facial recognition system has been instrumental in identifying over 10,000 individuals involved in various activities.
Among those identified are Ukrainian citizens captured during the conflict and 50 individuals implicated in the unlawful transportation of children from Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories to the Russian Federation. Furthermore, the technology has been used to identify servicemen of the Russian military, members of their National Defense Force, and several Russian propagandists. These propagandists are known for providing material support to the occupying forces and participating in the information warfare against Ukraine.
Additionally, the system has been effective in identifying collaborators and traitors within Ukraine, as well as individuals involved in both criminal and administrative violations. This identification process aids in the enforcement of law and order within the tumultuous regions affected by the ongoing hostilities.
The discussion between Ukrainian border officials and Clearview AI suggests a strong undertone of continued partnership, with the potential for even more sophisticated integration of technology into border security operations.
