California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 2876, mandating the inclusion of artificial intelligence literacy in K-12 education, preparing students for an AI-driven future.

In a significant educational policy development, California Governor Gavin Newsom has sanctioned a new legislative measure aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy into the core curriculum for K-12 students. The bill, known as AB 2876, was initiated by Assemblymember Marc Berman and was signed into law on Wednesday. This move comes at a time when AI is becoming deeply embedded in various facets of daily life and is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping future job markets.

Assemblymember Berman articulated the intent behind the legislation in a statement, emphasizing the dual-edged nature of AI technology. He remarked, “AI has the potential to positively impact the way we live, but only if we know how to use it, and use it responsibly.” Berman highlighted the urgency of equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to navigate a world increasingly influenced by AI technologies. He stressed that it was vital for students to comprehend AI’s basic principles, recognize its applications, and understand its implications, limitations, and ethical considerations. This understanding, Berman noted, would prepare them to be safe, ethical, and adept users of AI technologies as they become more prevalent.

The enactment of AB 2876 mandates the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) to include AI literacy content into the mathematics, science, and history-social science curriculum frameworks during their next scheduled revisions. This curriculum revision will also incorporate media literacy into instructional materials for English language arts/English language development alongside science, mathematics, and history-social science.

The decision to integrate AI into the educational framework is supported by findings from the 2023 AI Index report by the Stanford Institute for Human Centered Artificial Intelligence. The report underscores an increasing demand for AI-related professional skills across almost all American industrial sectors. It also points out the prevalent gap between those who design AI systems and those who utilise them, indicating a pressing need for a more widespread understanding of AI processes and implications.

By institutionalizing AI education within the K-12 system, California aims to bridge this gap, ensuring that all students, irrespective of their prospective career paths, receive the foundational AI literacy needed to succeed in an AI-driven landscape. The integration is aimed at fostering a generation that is well-versed in the potential and responsibilities that accompany the use of AI technologies, thereby preparing them for a future where such knowledge is indispensable.
