BeeKeeperAI and Topcon Healthcare forge partnership to enhance AI in ophthalmology

BeeKeeperAI and Topcon Healthcare have announced a strategic partnership aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the field of ophthalmology, a move expected to revolutionise how eye-related diseases are detected and managed. This collaboration, announced on 16th October 2024, is primarily focused on harnessing AI to draw insights from ocular imaging data to facilitate earlier disease detection and improve patient outcomes.

BeeKeeperAI, a company known for its privacy-preserving AI technologies, will team up with Topcon Healthcare, a key player in eye care technology, through its integrated Harmony platform paired with BeeKeeperAI’s EscrowAI platform. This partnership ensures both the protection of sensitive patient data and the intellectual property of AI models used in healthcare solutions.

Ali Tafreshi, CEO & President of Topcon Healthcare, expressed that the collaboration is aimed at accelerating medical innovation while safeguarding data security and patient privacy. According to Tafreshi, this partnership will empower healthcare providers with better tools, enhancing eye care and overall health management.

A significant project under this venture is aiding the French company AiScreenings to validate its aiVista AI model using fundus photographs stored on the Harmony platform in the United States. BeeKeeperAI’s technology facilitates this validation while ensuring the confidentiality of both the data and the algorithm. AiScreenings’ CEO, Arnaud Lambert, noted that the collaboration provides the necessary computing access to expedite their model’s market approval processes in the U.S.

The main challenge addressed by BeeKeeperAI is securing the intellectual property of AI models during cross-border data computations. Michael Blum, Co-founder and CEO of BeeKeeperAI, highlighted their EscrowAI platform’s role in protecting sensitive data and ensuring privacy. The integration of their technology into Topcon Healthcare’s Harmony promotes a secure, efficient AI development model.

As part of the alliance, Topcon Healthcare will invest in BeeKeeperAI’s financing round to enhance the EscrowAI platform’s capabilities. Notably, Ali Tafreshi will also be joining BeeKeeperAI’s Board of Directors, ensuring active involvement in the strategic direction. Additionally, the partnership will leverage Microsoft Azure’s confidential computing services to support the initiatives.

The support from Microsoft underscores the significance of this venture. David Rhew, Global Chief Medical Officer & Vice President for Healthcare at Microsoft, highlighted the transition towards confidential computing that enables secure and responsible AI-powered innovation without needing to relocate data. This is particularly crucial in regulated data industries like healthcare, where privacy and data security are paramount.
