Austin embraces AI to streamline building permit process

The City of Austin has announced a significant advancement in its building permit assessment process by entering into a five-year contract with Archistar, a company renowned for its AI-driven property and planning solutions. This contract follows a successful three-month pilot programme and marks an effort to streamline the building permit process through advanced technology.

Archistar’s technology, known as eCheck, is set to revolutionise how building plans are assessed. The initial implementation will focus on single-family residential properties. The eCheck system provides applicants with the capability to submit their designs for a pre-check assessment. This process promises to enhance the speed, efficiency, and transparency of building permit assessments, ultimately improving the overall experience for applicants.

In addition to this primary application, the City of Austin is testing the waters of using automation for compliance reviews with a second pilot programme. In this endeavour, Austin is partnering with the International Code Council (ICC) and Archistar to automate compliance reviews related to the International Building Code. This initiative is part of Austin’s broader strategy to integrate cutting-edge technology into city services to better support customers, staff, and the wider community.

José Roig, the director of Austin’s Development Services Department, highlighted the transformative potential of the eCheck technology. “The eCheck technology will transform the building plan review process, helping us deliver a smoother process for applicants and better service to our community,” remarked Roig. He expressed optimism that the Archistar platform will enable faster and more informed feedback on building plans, which is pivotal in enhancing the city’s development process.

These initiatives are reflective of Austin’s proactive approach in adopting innovative solutions to modernise its infrastructure and services. By integrating artificial intelligence into its operational framework, Austin aims to set a precedent for how city governments can leverage technology to improve service delivery and customer satisfaction.
