Amplitude has acquired Command AI, a startup focused on boosting app user engagement, integrating its innovative technologies to enhance personalised user experiences.

Amplitude, a well-known entity in the digital analytics spectrum, has announced its acquisition of Command AI, a burgeoning startup focused on enhancing app user engagement. Command AI, with its roots in San Francisco and formerly known as CommandBar, will see the majority of its 30-strong team transition to Amplitude. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, Command AI’s co-founder and CEO, James Evans, described the acquisition as unexpected but promising.

Founded in 2021, Command AI originally aimed to facilitate the incorporation of search functions within web apps. The company, under the leadership of Evans and his co-founders Richard Freling and Vinay Ayyala, developed an innovative in-app search bar that offered personalised results, shortcuts, and highlighted new app features. Over time, Command AI broadened its toolset to include a chatbot, AI Co-Browsing, and Nudge Autopilot, which uses metrics to auto-suggest app features to users.

Command AI quickly became a mainstay in app development, boasting 25 million regular end-users through collaborations with notable clients such as Hashicorp, Gusto, Yotpo, and LaunchDarkly. Prior to its acquisition, Command AI successfully raised $23.8 million in funding from a cohort of investors, including Insight Partners, Itai Tsiddon, and Thrive Capital.

The acquisition aims to integrate Command AI’s technologies into Amplitude’s suite, as outlined by Amplitude CEO and co-founder Spenser Skates. This strategic inclusion is expected to enhance Amplitude’s offerings, allowing them to deliver personalised user assistance through interactive product tours and onboarding experiences. Scheduled for release early next year, Command AI’s technology will debut with checklists and guides designed to help Amplitude customers develop app and website action plans, along with interactive product tours.

Additionally, a feature named Announcements will leverage Command AI’s capabilities to enable the configuration of intelligent triggers within apps for notifications such as updates and promotions. The alignment with Amplitude’s existing analytics tools will enable more seamless interaction management and user data analytics, fostering a deeper user-feedback loop.

Command AI has maintained integrations with Amplitude prior to the acquisition, and the merger is seen by Evans as a step forward towards a more unified approach to understanding and influencing user behaviour. With the acquisition, Evans is set to assume the role of Director of Product at Amplitude, while Ayyala will transition to the position of Engineering Director. Together, they will helm Amplitude’s newly formed Command AI product unit, ensuring continued support for existing Command AI clients through the calendar year.

This acquisition marks Amplitude’s third major agreement since its establishment, following the acquisition of ClearBrain in 2020 and Iteratively in 2021. The company currently boasts over 2,700 paying customers, including 26 entities from the Fortune 100 list, showcasing its significant presence in the analytics domain.
